I have a M.Ed. in special education from Duke University and 25
years of experience working with students with disabilities and
their families. As a former teacher, assistant principal,
principal, and compliance coordinator for IDEA and Section 504 in the MD Public Schools, I know the internal process for creating and implementing IEPs
that are compliant with the IDEA 2004 and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.
Many advocates are parents of special needs students or may have successfully managed their own disabilities. They come from a knowledgeable and practical hands-on perspective. My perspective comes from inside the system. As compliance coordinator, I was responsible for coordinating special education mediation and due process hearings that necessitated knowing and understanding state and federal regulations and working closely with school and parent attorneys.
